Sheri... your exposure was one fourhundredth @ f5.6 so at f18 it would be approx. one fortieth of a second, so you would need a tripod. Since photos don't cost anything these days until you go to print, I always shoot shots like this at a variety of f stops and shutter speeds and then keep the one I like best later. So, my advice is to always experiment with your f stop. (not so much for landscapes, where you want to be stopped down or wildlife where you usually want the opposite).

3:2 is the standard length:width ratio and for most larger prints you have to crop differently to give the 7:5, 10:8 and 11:14 prints that most photo finishers do. The 16:9 ratio is becoming more popular (like a television) and I think in the future it will be a standard. If I really like a photo, I will get it printed in any ratio I think it looks best and then get a custom frame.

Re photo shopping, I don't do a heck of a lot but vibrancy and things like that need doing and usually at least a little bit of cloning or healing. If you don't have a program, consider one of the lite versions like photoshop elements which is about $100. You can also get free downloads off the internet to use for a month, so you can try them out. Try going to adobe website and you can trial photoshop elements or the full blown photoshop but in your case with limited experience elements will be fine and it is pretty darn good.

Ok. Thank you very much for the feedback. I agree with the branch, and figured the dof. I just didn't realize I would have to stop it down so far. F/18 looks a bit unclear on a landscape, but hopefully it won't be as bad in a situation like this. I would then need to use the tripod, no, and hope for no breeze? I think you both have a better photoshop program than I. Is 16:9 a crop size? I'm not familiar with that. My program came with the computer and is very limited.

I was thinking exactly like Wayne. If you crop out the top branch and change format to 16:9 it is better (in my opinion). Stopped down to have more dof would also be better.

Sheri, after viewing and reading your comments this would be my take on it. Firstly open it and view large, then scroll down using the far right slide bar to eliminate the top branch, then I would have shifted over to the left and closed the aperture setting to F18? which would allow you to focus on the water droplet and enhance the depth of field. Hope this makes sense.

Thank you Hmellon. As is typical of flash, I had to experiment a fair amount before I created a keeper shot... As holding the flash to the left (being right handed) didn't work, because the stick was in the way and created a barrier to the light, I ended up laying the flash down in the dirt on my right, so I could control the camera!
