A surviving shoreline tree maintains a firm grip on Terra Firma at Sandbanks Provincial Park, in Prince Edward County Ontario. Shore trees were hit particularly hard in 2019 by excessive lake ice during winter, and record high water levels coupled with frequent wind storms. The excessive erosion saw the destruction of a great many trees within the park, some of them quite old. These trees are important for stabilizing fragile shores, some of them comprised of sand. This past summer parks staff were forced to close one of the main beaches in the park for the entire season, partly to allow nature to begin healing but also because there was simply no beach left.
