Yesterday Point Petre reached an important milestone. The Ministry of the Environment Climate and Parks has begun the process of creating a Conservation Reserve here. Point Petre in Prince Edward County Ontario is one of the last remaining original shorelines of Lake Ontario, and as such is a rare ecosystem. Nature Canada, and local environmental group South Shore Joint Initiative have been working hard to get to this point, and their hard work has finally paid off. Currently Point Petre is owned by the Federal Government but it is unregulated, and so there has been a huge problem with littering and atv activity. This designation will hopefully protect the site from future development and help control the abuse of irresponsible visitors.
