Traveling the gravel roads that surround vast agricultural fields in search of snowy owls has been a therapeutic practice for me throughout this particularly harsh winter. Scanning the snowy flats in search for a lump with just a little bit of irregular texture was always rewarding when a snowy owl was spotted. This owl species does a lot of sitting, sometimes on the ground & sometimes on a slightly elevated perch. They sit and listen for a prey animal to reveal itself from under the thick snow. Their meditative behaviour was one that I loved to mimic- pulling onto the side of the road & respectfully observing an owl go about it’s business creates a uniquely tranquil atmosphere.
