Having spent my first winter near a large body of water, I was amazed to see the power of the expanding ice on the bay--how it would move large rocks up the embankment, and how the ice would expand up over the shore like this. Still, we had a mild winter; in previous winters, neighbours say the ice crawled up the shore to a height of eight feet or more!
