I was puzzled by what I saw flitting around our lilac tree, too big for a butterfly and too small for a hummingbird. I managed to get these images with a bit of luck. It moves very quickly! I didn't know they existed and only discovered this on searching the Internet. You can see the long black tongue taking nectar from the flowers.
