A cool fall morning on the the West Coast of Vancouver Island BC had me staring face to face with an Island Sea wolf. I knew this pack of wolves was feeding on the salmon at this particular river as they had left tracks on the beach. Wolves also only eat the head of the salmon as to avoid parasites, and there was no shortage of headless salmon on the beach. I put in countless attempts of hiking in the dark and setting up at the river in head to toe camouflage waiting quietly for daylight. Then it finally happened. This wolf silently trotted out of the Old growth timber and onto the river edge at 75 yards. He took in his surroundings, and then proceeded to grab a salmon and chow down. As I snapped a couple photos just praying he would come one step closer so I could see his whole reflection in the water, he turned and left as quickly as he showed up. I continued to make the trip, hoping for another encounter, but our paths never did cross again. their sign was there, but not the wolf.
