Turnpike was the power under my soles for twelve days through the twists and turns of the Allenby Pass trail. It was humbling to feel his strength as he strode up the steep routes, and to feel his strain in the rhythm of his breath. I like to think we became close through this, although in the mornings as I approached him with my saddle bags full of camera gear, he'd see me and walk the other way until he was fenced into a corner. I don't take it personally. All I know is that the term horsepower will always have a richer meaning from this point onward.
