Filtered Partial Solar Eclipse, Oct 14, 2023

The solar eclipse of Oct. 14, 2023, was technically an annular eclipse, which has the moon entirely in front of the sun but too close to Earth to cover up the entire solar sphere. However, Manitoulin Island wasn't under the direct path of the moon's shadow so essentially I shot what is called a partial solar eclipse. I used a telephoto lens on a tripod and cropped the original photo. For most of the show, cloud cover interfered with my attempt to shoot through a Thousand Oaks 8-inch solar filter made for telescopes, but near the end the clouds cleared sufficiently, and sporadically, allowing me to capture this shot. I could have done better with my telescope but I don't think my back would have withstood the effort to assemble it. Even so, here you can see, if you zoom in, the silhouette of the moon’s topography as well as several prominent sunspots, some of which are larger than the Earth.
