Rough-legged hawks are also known as Roughies. These hawks breed and spend their spring and summer in the Artic regions of North America and Eurasia. During migration Roughies can be seen in the fall and winter months in southern Canada and through much of the US. I spotted this Roughie perched high in a tree scouting the open field beside him. He sat for a few minutes and then took to the sky. This is my first encounter with a Roughie, I am hoping he decides to winter in this area. It would be nice to get some winter shots of this great looking hawk.

You nailed this Debra, the timing of the action was spot on
Perfect timing on this beautiful takeoff shot Debra. They're great birds to photograph and you captured this one in very nice detail and focus.
Super action shot Debra. Exceptional pose of the bird and the lighting from the top gives a pretty nice transparency to the tail feathers. The 50/50 compo with the blue sky and the subject make it for a very appealing shot. Well done.
Nice action capture Debra! Can they also fly backward? I have yet to photograph one!
Great action shot, Debra. We have many Roughies around here (Maritimes) but it's still nice to see them.
