Northern Hawk Owls are an arctic species, migrating south during "irruption" years when their usual prey population collapses. Several have been seen near Pinawa MB this winter. Here, you an see the "hawk-like" features that give him his name i.e. small size, a long tail used for stabilization, a perch on a solitary tree-top, and daytime hunting
