A Northern Saw Whet owl in the process of downing the back half of a deer mouse. Saw whets that I have witnessed usually eat a deer mouse over 2 feedings, the first one they eat the head and some of the innards one piece at a time.. then they have a nap for as long as an hour or two.. then they will eat the remaining half by swallowing it whole.
