Boorangoora Paperbark

K'gari (Fraser Island) is the largest sand island in the world. It's located a few kilometres off the coast of Queensland, Australia. One of the most popular places to visit on K’gari is McKenzie Lake. Images of its famous paperbark trees, white sand and blue water often accompany promotional media for the island. The hype is well warranted as the lake and surrounding forested hills are stunningly beautiful. To the traditional indigenous custodians, the Butchulla, the lake is known as “Boorangoora.” The word means “Waters of Wisdom.” For their wise ones it was a place for decision-making. They would gather here to listen for messages sent from the spirits on the breezes.
