We were canoeing a local lake when a pair of Common Loons began calling and swimming in our direction. We sat quietly and fortunately they continued to swim and dive in our general direction. They surfaced close to us a couple of times and eventually swam under the canoe and continued further out into the lake. Although I didn’t get the shot I wanted, I was thrilled to see them and consider myself very privileged to have observed them at the distance they were comfortable with. There is nothing common about the Common Loon. They are very striking with their black and white striped collars and their checkerboard backs!! What a thrill!
