This mother loon (Gavia immer) protects her newly hatched baby from a light sprinkle. The baby chick is peering out from under the outstretched wing unable to comprehend the many obstacles that life has in store for them. I have watched this nesting sight for a long time. Her last successful hatch was seven years ago. Heavy rains in mid June here in Nova Scotia usually end in her nest getting submerged before the chick is hatched.
