This mother loon (Gavia immer) floats by with a baby chick peering out from under a protective wing. I have watched this nesting sight for a long time. Her last successful hatch was seven years ago. Heavy rains in mid June here in Nova Scotia usually end in her nest getting submerged before the chick is hatched.
