On a quiet morning at the Stamp River on Vancouver Island, I was treated to a flurry of American Dipper activity. I'd never been so close to these amicable birds as they dipped and dove into the turbulent stream. I watched them pull up larvae and gulp it back in the blink of an eye before diving back in again. One even plucked a salmon egg out of the river, a nod to the richness of the waterway.
