Walking up to a remote alpine lake in the Selkirk Mountains, I paused just before leaving the last line of trees and stepping into a vast field of loose rock. Out of the silence, this small ermine appeared — darting nimbly among the boulders with effortless agility. Then, with a sudden boldness, it stopped and locked eyes with me, offering this fleeting moment before disappearing back into the stones.
