Grizzly bear claws are powerful tools used for digging up roots, grubs, and small animals, as well as for tearing apart logs and carcasses to access food. They are also used for defense, catching fish, and excavating dens for hibernation. You can see this sow's claws clearly in this shot. Her front claws are particularly formidable, measuring several inches in length. The length can vary, but they are generally around 2 to 4 inches
