The Second before Impact

This Short-eared owl changed direction and dropped to the ground so quickly I barely had time to follow it. The impact looked substantial and the owl was initially motionless causing me to hold my breath and cross my fingers. Once it started to wriggle around I knew it was still trying to control its prey under the snow. Fortunately for the owl, but not the mouse, it eventually lifted off and perched in a tree to enjoy its meal.
