Standing beside the ice curtain of Bridal Veil Falls, on Manitoulin Island, Ontario, I had intended to hike right underneath the overhang, as so many people had done before, but the ice was just too treacherous without my cleats. Consequently, I stayed just outside. I could hear the water hurtling down the thirty-five-foot drop and had to be satisfied with the beauty of the green ice drops in the formation to my left.
