The black bears on Vancouver Island are a distinct isolated sub species (Ursus Americanus) and are larger. Their coat is blacker and healthier due to their diet of salmon and berries. They are a classic case of island gigantism with males weighing in at 600lbs plus!! They have broader larger skulls due to their distinct genetic makeup. The bears have been isolated since the last ice age when they colonized here.
