Winter Flame of the Yukon

The red fox thrives in one of Canada’s harshest environments through a remarkable combination of intelligence, adaptability, and specialized winter survival traits. In the Yukon, temperatures can plunge far below freezing, yet the fox remains active throughout the long northern winter. Its thick winter coat provides exceptional insulation, while the fur covering its paws helps protect against snow and ice while also improving traction. The fox’s large bushy tail acts like a blanket, wrapping around its face and body during rest to conserve heat. Acute hearing allows it to detect rodents moving beneath deep snow, often diving headfirst into the snowpack to capture prey hidden below the surface. Photographing this fox in the Yukon wilderness was a reminder of how resilient and perfectly adapted wildlife can be in Canada’s northern landscapes.
