I was a considerable distance away - too far to notice the lack of a second leg until I got home and processed photos on a computer. Initially I thought she had tucked her one leg up out of sight but after going through numerous photos, realized her impairment. Having said that, the lack of a second leg/foot did not affect her ability to catch insects. She was very protective of her nest and watched me for some time as I stood motionless across the other side of the pond. Once she assessed me as nonthreatening, she slowly made her way to her nest to feed her young.
