I was standing in amongst the camouflage of the boreal forest waiting/watching for activity around a fox den. The smell of the forest was very refreshing, I reached over pinching a spruce tip off a branch, slipped it into my mouth and slowly savoured its delicious taste. I could hear two loons calling from a distance, closer I heard a blue Jay quacking as a raven flew by. I felt at peace while I continued to quietly wait. Then from the corner of my eye something caught my attention, I remained very still while I peered out to get a better look. Oh, it’s a bear! A big, beautiful black bear was strolling towards me but I knew he probably hadn’t seen or heard me. I reached for my bear spray and at the same time spoke in a loud voice to the bear “ Hey bear, I’m leaving, hey bear, I’m leaving” The bear stopped and looked up. I noticed his amazing white chest blaze and his size. I raised by bear spray as I stepped forward and to the side while facing the bear and loudly repeated my phrase “ hey bear, I’m leaving” he watched while I slowly backed away from him. Then he quickly turned and ran full speed in the direction that he’d come. To be continued… (Not this is a different bear from a different day)
